AzBT® 50K — The Essence of the Challenge
The 50K race of the Azores Bravos Trail® is intense, technical, and deeply rooted in identity. It represents a serious challenge, ideal for those seeking a demanding yet balanced distance, where effort management is just as important as physical strength.
The race starts in the parish of Agualva, in a rural setting that quickly gives way to natural terrain. In the very first kilometers, the course enters the island’s volcanic heart with the passage through Algar do Carvão. Descending into this dormant volcano is one of the most striking moments of the race, offering direct contact with Terceira’s geology.
Back on the surface, the route continues onto the Trilho dos Mistérios Negros, one of the most emblematic segments of the event. The landscape shaped by the 1761 eruption, the uneven terrain, and the almost primordial atmosphere demand constant attention, balance, and endurance.
As the race progresses, the challenge truly takes shape in the long ascent to Rocha do Chambre, the great symbol of the Azores Bravos Trail®. The climb is demanding and relentless, but the reward comes in the form of a wide, powerful view that more than compensates for the accumulated effort.
The course then crosses Caldeira Guilherme Moniz, a vast pastoral landscape where contact with nature is constant. Further ahead, the ascent to Serra do Morião signals the approach to the final part of the race. From the top, views over Angra do Heroísmo, Monte Brasil, and the Atlantic reinforce the sense of achievement.
The descent leads athletes directly into the heart of the city, along trails and historic streets, to the finish line at Parque Municipal do Relvão. Completing the 50K of the Azores Bravos Trail® means embracing a demanding, intense, and deeply rewarding challenge.
